The Realistic Cleaning Schedule Every Mom Needs (That Actually Works!)

Updated: Nov 21, 2024

Hey there, busy lady! We all know that keeping a clean house while juggling work, kids, and life, in general, can feel like a task so great even Wonder Woman would shudder.

Let’s face it, moms—keeping a clean house while managing kids, work, and that never-ending to-do list can feel like trying to train a cat to do the dishes. It’s overwhelming, and honestly, who has time for a lengthy list of extra burdens to manage?

Why a Realistic Cleaning Schedule Matters

We’ve all seen those chore charts that make you think you’ll have a spotless home by lunch. Spoiler alert: Life happens. Soccer practice, tantrums, work deadlines, and maybe even a nap (because you deserve it!) can throw those plans out the window.

A realistic cleaning schedule is all about working smarter, not harder. It focuses on small, manageable tasks spread throughout the week so you can keep the chaos at bay without feeling like Cinderella before the ball.

The good news: you don’t need perfection, you just need realistic.

What if I told you there’s a way to make it manageable, even fun? That’s right, we're talking about a weekly, realistic cleaning schedule that actually works, without losing your sanity!

Realistic Cleaning Schedule

The key to keeping your home in order is using a cleaning schedule that works with your life, not against it.

Understanding how this Realistic Cleaning Schedule works is the first step towards a cleaner home! Some tasks need to be done daily (hello, dirty dishes), while others are tackled weekly or even monthly.

The Weekly Cleaning Planner is a great way to break down the entire routine into a weekly plan, making it even easier to follow.

Grab your favorite beverage, settle in.

Let’s dive into this practical & realistic house cleaning schedule!

How to Use This Realistic Cleaning Schedule

Each day you'll do the Daily Tasks, like making beds, dishes, etc. They're like the equivalent of brushing your teeth, but for your house.

But from that point, there's tons of flexibility within the routine.

Here’s 4 simple, no-fuss ways to get the job done.

1. Weekend Warrior (Family Style)

This involves getting everyone involved all during the same time frame. Go Team! Block off one day to use this time for super focused cleaning effort. Assign easy age-appropriate jobs to the kids—like wiping surfaces or tidying their rooms.

Why it works: When everyone pitches in, you’re not stuck doing it all. Plus, it leaves the busy weekdays open and available.

Who it works for: This schedule is ideal for dual working partners and single parents. It also works great for larger families with older children.

2. Themed Days (One Area, per day)

This involves batching each category, which is already done for you as part of the ABC cleaning routine. Assign specific chores to specific days.

Monday: (C+) Clean bathrooms, speed-clean style

Tuesday: (B) Vacuum high-traffic areas & Mop floors.

Wednesday: (B+) Specific Appliances

Thursday: (A) Deeper Biannual Cleaning

Friday: (A+) Decluttering Task of Week

Saturday: Nothing

Sunday: Catch-up day (a.k.a. whatever you didn't finish if needed)

Personally I like to start my catch up day in reverse order, A+ through C. That way is I don't get to finish everything outstanding, it's not a bid deal because it will be back on the schedule again soon.

Why it works: Focusing on one big task per day makes it doable and less overwhelming. This way, you’re not overwhelmed trying to do everything at once. Plus, it keeps you from feeling like Saturday is “cleaning day” prison.

Who it works for: This works great for "Type A" individuals who thrive on routine and want minimal distractions.

3. Daily Quick Hits (15-20 mins, tops!)

Select one small task from each category C+ through A+. Check out the planner for a detailed breakdown. You can start from the top down or attack the worst item first, your choice.

Why it works: These little tasks keep things from spiraling out of control, but still doesn't require too much time or energy all at once. It also provides even progress across all categories.

Who it works for: This works great for stay at home Moms who prefer to spread the tasks throughout the day. This is also a good option for work from home Moms who appreciate the chance to get up from their desks during breaks. It also works well for anyone who likes a bit of structured variety.

4. Free Spirit (Whatever, Whenever)

Now initially, this might not sound like much of a plan. However, this option is still somewhat structured because the specific chore plan is already laid out for you each week. Just keep in mind with this plan there is still a matter of "Whoever". It's still important to assign tasks to each family member so they can complete chores at their preference or leisure.

Why it works: It provides the most flexibility out of the four options and requires zero advance scheduling. It works well as a backup plan during busy seasons too.

Who it works for: People who thrive on this method often have shifting work schedules. Others that prefer this route proudly claim the "Type B" anti-planner status.

Realistic Cleaning Schedule Tips

Lower the Bar

A “clean enough” house is just fine. You’re a mom, not a museum curator.

Use Timers

Set a 10- or 20-minute timer for tasks—it keeps you focused and makes chores feel less daunting.

Involve the Family

Cleaning isn’t a solo sport. Get the whole family involved! Assign age-appropriate tasks to your kids and turn cleaning into a fun, family activity. You can even make a game out of it – who can pick up the most toys in 5 minutes? Winner gets to choose the movie for movie night!

Use Time-Saving Tools

Invest in some time-saving cleaning tools. A good vacuum, microfiber cloths, and an all-purpose cleaner can work wonders. Also, consider setting a timer for each task. You’ll be amazed at how much you can get done in just 15 minutes!

Stay Consistent

Consistency is the secret sauce to a clean home. Stick to your schedule as closely as possible. Over time, these tasks will become second nature, and you’ll find that maintaining a clean house is much less daunting.

Create a Cleaning Playlist

Everything’s better with music, right? Create a cleaning playlist with your favorite upbeat songs. Music can make even the most dreaded chores a little more enjoyable. Dance like no one’s watching as you scrub those countertops!

Celebrate Progress

Whether it’s a clean bathroom or simply keeping the laundry monster at bay, give yourself credit.

Reward Yourself

After a week of sticking to your cleaning schedule, reward yourself. Whether it’s a bubble bath, a movie night, or a sweet treat, having something to look forward to can keep you motivated.

Reevaluate and Adjust

At the end of each month, take a moment to evaluate your cleaning schedule style. What’s working? What’s not? Adjust as needed to keep things running smoothly. Flexibility is key!

Realistic Progress VS Perfect Inaction

Even an absolutely perfect plan on paper is rendered pointless if it's unreasonable. Action trumps inaction every time.

The beauty of a realistic cleaning schedule is that it gives you permission to let go of perfection. Your home doesn’t have to look like a showroom to be a place of comfort and joy for your family. Stick to what works for you, adjust as needed, and remember—you’re doing amazing, even if there are crumbs on the floor.

Don’t aim for perfection. Life happens, and some days you might not get everything done. That’s okay! Set realistic goals and be kind to yourself. The aim is to create a manageable routine, not to stress you out.

Now go tackle those counters like the cleaning rockstar you are, and maybe treat yourself to that cup of coffee you reheated three times today. You’ve earned it!

There you have it – a fun, practical guide to a realistic house cleaning schedule, that actually works. Remember, the goal is to make your life easier, not harder. So take it one day at a time, involve the family, and don’t forget to reward yourself for a job well done!
