Clean With Me: The White House Inauguration Transition Edition

The holidays were magical 🎄, your home was dazzling ✨, and now… it’s time to pack it all away.

But wait—don’t roll your eyes yet! Let’s turn this into a fun, fresh start clean with me. Let's take some cues from the presidential staff of The White House, yep, you read that right! Their inauguration prep is basically the ultimate masterclass in un-decorating, cleaning, and organization.

If they can completely flip The White House for the new incoming President in just 5 hours, YOU can rock cleaning and un-decorating from the Christmas holiday like a pro. Here’s how:

1. Clean With Me Plan: Schedule It

White House staff have a battle plan, and so should you! Inauguration Day is 75 days away from Election Day, but the staff don't wait. They start the planning process right after the election results.

They handle coordinating everything from painting, flooring, furniture, curtains, and general decor changes. All of it happening at the same time!

📝 Start with a game plan and decide which room to tackle first. I was a little hesitant to take them down this year.

For starters, my decorations were on point this year (this rarely happens) and I wasn't sure I was ready to part from them for another 10 months yet. Secondly, it takes so long to put all of that decor up. I dreaded the thought of undoing all that hard work after just 45 days.

But ultimately, thoughts of a fresh start, a blank canvas for the upcoming Valentine's Day holiday, and Inauguration festivities gave me the extra boost of motivation I needed.

What better way to do a clean with me, than doing it simultaneously alongside with the White House staff. Try visualizing that clean, peaceful space you’re about to create.

As much as I enjoy seeing my Christmas decor on display, I am always pleasantly surprised at how good it feels to have more space and less visual distractions. That “ahhhh” feeling is closer than you think!

The Oval Office waits for no one. Set a deadline and give yourself a firm time block to get things done. Even “one room a day” beats "maybe I'll do it this weekend.”

Turn on a podcast, set a timer, and GO! ⏳ You’re the boss, and having a plan with alongside the rest of society is extra motivating.

2. Clean With Me Prep: Bag It, Box It, & Label It

The White House art, decor, and other furnishings are meticulously stored and archived when not on display. I imagine its all categorized in some form of digital manner and printed in binders as well.

The decorations that help make your Christmas at home magical deserve some similar TLC too. Whether its a Baby's first Christmas ornament or your newest holiday find from Hobby Lobby, we want these things safely stored away for next year.

So gather your bins, bags, or boxes, and sort those ornaments, wreaths, and twinkly lights into categories. It's better to stock up on these things before Christmas if you can.

The retail world is always moving along to the next holiday before the current one is even over. So if you want cute, color coordinated red & green containers, it's best to get them ahead of schedule.

Remember to add labels, because future you will thank you next year! 🎁

I like to use my Brother labeler I bought ages ago, but even a piece of painter tape with a Sharpie description will do.

I even went ahead and took pictures of how I had things arranged before I packed it all away.

Red sign on shelf reads "BELIEVE everything is possible." Flanked by green plants and white candles, creates an inspiring Christmas atmosphere.

I plan on printing the photos out and storing them with the containers too. This will make decorating so much easier next year! I also store most things together by room to make it even faster.

3. Clean With Me Team: Recruit Your Helpers

White House transitions are teamwork all the way, and guess what—you’ve got a squad, too! 🙌

Assign easy tasks to your kids or partner. Whether it’s carrying heavier items down into the basement or simply having an extra hand to pass ornaments down from the tree, make it a family effort.

Maybe even add some hot cocoa bribes or a movie night to improve motivation.
